Re: My first boat - 1982 Starcraft SS160 rebuild

Thanks guys. Another guy at work had a great idea for a flaring tool. He thought the inside races of the right sized ball bearing would work. Of course it would have to be the right size bearing with a split inner race. If I can find the part number for the right one that would work I will post it. I need to find a heavier duty pop riveter. I am barely able to pop them with my little riveter but I am not sure I can get a long handle h/d riveter under the splashwell and I don't think mine will survive the rest of the rivets I need to replace. Almost ready to caulk seems and get ready for paint. Hoping to splash first weekend in June, paint or not!

The tubes look good. I am right behind ya on my transom and hope the tubes turn out that well. Good job on the knee brace as well.

I was there the other day looking for them. I don't think they had any on the shelf. Might try again today.

You should get one. I did tonight. Princess Auto gave me the last sale price. Man, is that slick! I will be able to plug all those holes in no time! Got the transom caulked tonight. With any luck I will be painting next weekend. Too bad I have to go back to work tomorrow, but I guess a guy has to rest sometime!;)

Hopefully no one from Princess Auto is reading this, but they give you a 90 day window on sale prices, so if it was on sale or is going to come on sale again within 90 days you get the sale price. So I always ask, and of all the 100s and 100s of bucks I've spent there I've only been turned down once.

The manager yesterday told me that as long as they has some left that they had purchased for the sale he could honor the sale price.

I have been trying to find the link to the video showing the roll and roll method of painting. Trying to decide on that or spraying with HVLP gun. Anyone able to direct me to the video. I have tried searching through plenty of threads but I can't remember who's it was that I saw it in.

HVLP gun --- really the best bang for the buck.... really reasonable in price and the result is pretty decent ---- pro - no... but quite decent. Roll and tip works as well... but like most tools in the shop, you'll inevitably find another use! :)

Not sure if that was the same link. I never watched the video. I already own a HVLP gun. Just wasn't sure I wanted the mess of over spray. I will probably use it though.

Re: My first boat - 1982 Starcraft SS160 rebuild

Picked up paint the other day. Decided to go with Tremclad. Hope it works ok. Spent an hour last night cleaning the original decals off the port side. Just need to clean the glue now. I might invest in one of those decal erasers for the drill. They are supposed to remove the glue and sticker at the same time with less elbow grease. I also got some of the bare aluminum spot primed with etching primer. Hopefully I can get the Jeep out of the shop tomorrow so I can have some room to paint next week.

Tremclad is Canadian Rustoleum so it'll be fine.

Been a month since my last update - due to the fact that there is still no update. Camping season is upon us and it looks like I will not be splashing my boat as planned this weekend  Hopefully get some paint on her in the next couple weeks though. At least I get to borrow my dad's boat for this weekend for our work camping /fishing derby. I will try to have an update soon for you guys.

My First Boat - 1982 Starcraft 160SS project resurrected...

Here's an update to an old thread finally!

Boat is suspended in my shop preparing for primer/paint hopefully within the next 2 weeks time permitting.

This thing has been apart for far too long - I hope I can remember where all the pieces are/go!

I removed the rear keel roller today to replace with a new one. The replacement has a 5/8" shaft - the original measures 3/4". Do I need to install bushings for the smaller shaft diameter? I can't seem to find any replacement rollers that accept a 3/4" shaft. My plan is to clean up and paint the trailer while the boat is off of it.

Smacd, if you want to start a new topic about finishing the project, you certainly can, but you could have just started posting to the original topic you linked above.

We can merge them if you'd like to continue w/ the original topic.

Welcome back

I thought there was some rule about 90 days inactive so I started a new one. Go ahead and merge them please.

The 90 day rule does not apply to thread starters. You can come back after 10 years and pick right up where you left off. If you can remember where all the pieces go.

:welcome: back to the DryDock. I'll move this over.
