Easy now Jas  I know you love destroying glassers ......... I am now having a little fun with it too...

As soon as I get the tank, harness, and steering system out she will be done and gone. Still searching for a place to dispose of the body locally. Sure don't want to pay to throw it out.

Re: My Chieftan project

Dissection is all complete on the donor boat, all that is left is to get rid of the hull. Bit tough getting out the fuel tank as it also had 2 strips of fiberglass over it and anchoring it to the hull. But pretty good shape 18 or 19 gallon tank.

Got my Nautolex in yesterday.....fast service from Defender. Received 3 days after ordering. It is sandstone which should keep the inside a lot cooler in the heat of the summer. Plenty wide enough to run up the sides of the hull so all rain can run straight back toward the transom. I believe I ordered enough extra to do the seat boxes and the doghouse.

Good luck disposing of that with out paying. I spent a few weeks stuffing 2x2 sections in the trash but still ended up hauling the sole down to the dump. Saved me about half the cost of disposal.

The Nautolex looks nice. Keep hammering away, that August splash date is just around the corner.

What a mess that glass doner was, hope you don't have to pay by the lb like I do here. With all that saturated foam it would be real expensive.

Re: My Chieftan project

Time is flying by fast and my salmon trip is rapidly approaching, Friday as a matter of fact. No the Chief won't be done but I just don't have enough hours in the day.

Donor boat is dead and gone. So happened I know a guy that runs a monster truck and took the old hull so he could crush it with his truck. Using his loader with forks he picked that bad boy off the trailer and away it went.....and at no charge :) The tank I cleaned up and put on Craigs and it was bought on the first day. The man said he wasn't even gonna try to dicker on the price....he wanted it and shelled out the greens.

Got a chance to fire up the engine from the donor. Spritzed some gas in the carb and she fired right up, and sounded pretty dang good. So pulled the plugs and did a quick compression check, all cylinders running near 150 with only one slightly lower but nothing to worry about. Hooked the fuel up so I could run her for a bit, rolled the starter a few times and then the starter began rapidly spinning. Hmmm........removed it to find that the gears inside blew apart..... that sucks as it was a brand new starter (yea made in china). Well at least it has a 1 year no hassle warranty so called the company up and they emailed me a prepaid mailing sticker to send it back to them and they will send me a new one.

Progress is now at a standstill now as I prepare for the trip and get all the camping stuff gathered up. Even got a coat of wax on the Thompson today so she will look good on the water.

Yes I was pleased at the no cost deal and would have loved to had a pic or two of that thing being hauled away but I was trying to steady the front of the boat and help push it on the forks so it would slide down and was unable to get a picture.

The trip to Frankfort/Traverse City was quite enjoyable. Although we didn't set the world afire catching fish we got plenty and some good size ones at that. But as all good vacations it was too short and now back at work.

Hopefully if the weather permits I will attempt to install the Nautolex. Got all the necessities including the famous J-roller. Then I can put in the cabin walls and start on the seat boxes.

A couple pics from the trip.

Re: My Chieftan project

Installed the Nautolex today. That was an enjoyable experience.......I think......the fumes got a bit overpowering but survived. Not a job I would want to tackle alone. My fishing buddy came over and gave a hand. We got it all laid out then rolled in in thirds and would do a one section front to back and roll it throughly, take a break, then do the next section. I think she turned out very well. Guess my next task will be installing the cabin walls. Coming along.......slowly but surely.

Re: My Chieftan project

Thanks! Yes it is a lighter color than most but is darker than the pics show, the flash kinda whites it. It is the sandstone which has like bronze coloring in it. As we fish a lot into the heat of the day my hopes is that it will keep the inside of the boat a bit cooler than had I went with a darker color.

I've been eyeballing sandstone for my SS. Good to see someone using it, gives me some sorta idea what to expect! It looks amazing from up north!

Love it! Did you use the Nautolex adhesive or something else?
