Re: My budget family boat- 83 Coho 134

Ya know, a few cans of phantom black and some re-pop decals sure would make that Merc look new again on the cheap.

Very true! Its really not that bad looking. Just very dirty in the pics from grinding greasy gaskets off. But it may get a little black rattle can. We will see. I just need it running for next weekend.

Now should i try to rebuild the cab myself or pay the local shop to do it?

Im not sure about tuning it, and I don't want to run into all the problems i had with the last "little job". Im pretty mechanically inclined, I think it could get it all apart and clean and back together, but im not sure about tuning. I don't do carb stuff....

Well then you could do this, order the carb kits yourself and read up on some threads here. If the job is still intimidating then have the shop do it for you and supply them with the kits you bought. They will surely rack you for about double the kit price for same parts so that should save you a little.

Yep, I have the kit. I talked to the local merc shop, they want $135 an hour to do it. I will probably try to do it myself, but i WILL wait until winter to do this one!!

Got the motor all put back together last night. I will try to start it today. Only problem i had is the manula choke linkage is in the wrong spot...

Started right up after winter! Been using it a ton lately. Seems to be running well, RPM's are a little low at WOT, about 4680.

With 600lbs of people food etc it runs 25-25.5 MPH on the GPS with light chop, at 4680 rpms. With just me its ~27, but the tach is jumpy. I haven't touched the motor. The carb probably could still use a rebuild, but I broke so many bolts doing those gaskets I haven't wanted to touch it again.

Do you still have /use your coho 134 ? I’m just restoring one and hard to find any info on them.
