My boat won't get up on plane with 2 people on board.

15' Bay Boat, Outcast DF (H2O) with 25HP Yamaha. The boat and engine weigh 1050. There is an 8'Talon on the back. Cranking battery in the rear. Deep cycle battery and Minn Kota Riptide in the front. The boat is rated for a 40HP engine.

The boat gets up nicely and does 22-23 mph when its just me onboard, which is just what I expected. The problem occurs when my 220lb buddy and his 20lbs of fishing gear is on board. Then the boat will only come up 1 out of 3 times and only if conditions are perfect. The ass end just won't come up and cavitation issues start at about 10-12 mph/46-48 RPM.

Would trim tabs help? I really don't want to re-power it with a 40.

Tried that already. My boat is a skiff and the only other seat is forward of the center console. I've even put him on the bow (not safe). haha

Tabs might help. Lower pitch prop is a reasonable idea. I'd try the prop first. Just remember he is adding more than 20% to your total weight so it will make a difference. Put 900 lb of bricks in your SUV and you get the idea.

You are underpowered for the load your carrying , period. Going down in pitch will help you get out of the hole , but you are going to lose top end speed when you are out solo. Next up, do you have a tach ? It's a guessing game without it AND if you go down in pitch you have to be aware that you may go over your redline if you do not have the matching payload.

Yup I do have a tach. Whats your thoughts on trim tabs?

Tabs will help , but not solve your issue long term. I will say it again, your underpowered by a lot , you need at least a 35 hp and a 40 would be my choice , if you want a nice running rig. You are going to work that motor to death , plain and simple.

Tabs will help, down propping will help, but the real fix is a larger outboard. According to what I could find on the web you only have 1/2 the maximum recommended horsepower.

A dolphin will be a cheaper quicker hands free help....
Smart Tab SX's are great hands free tabs...if you decide on them...get the flip up bracket for beaching and trailering.
Ultimately you need more HP.
