Re: My boat project.

Well, I made some progress since my last post.
I got the floor down, screwed down, and the first layer of glass over the seams and around the edges. I will be finishing that up soon.
I did encounter one problem that shouldn't be too major. After I got the floor in, fiberglassed, and was admiring my work I found a peice of floatation foam I planned on stuffing up under the bow seats. Not a big deal, I think I still have plenty of foam everywhere else. The kids picked up some of my mess and laid some life jackets on top of the foam and I completely overlooked it.
I sanded and stained the wood cover for the ski locker, tomorrow will put a few layers of eurathane over it to protect it and give it a shine. Don't want it too smooth though, in case wet feet slip and slide on it.
I have decided that for now I will refinish the other woodwork around the edges and stick the old ripped up seats back in..... For now. Checking our schedules we will only have a couple more days this year for boating, and it will be a week or two before I get the patch in the keel painted and cured. In reality I will probably only get one test run in before winter. So, let the floor set up, finish some glass work, then new carpet.
I got to wondering though, when I did have it out, before I sold it the first time and it developed a hole in it, I always had some water in the bilge when I pulled out of the water. I am thinking maybe it was leaking around the cap. Any ideas on good ways to fix that? I didn't pull the cap when replacing the floor and stringers, didn't want to mess with the 100+ rusty screws that hold it on! But if it is leaking there I will definately do what it takes to keep things dry!
Thanks again for all the help.

Re: My boat project.

In your post early on you mention that your stringers were only rotten in one section. Did you replace the entire stringer (both of them) or just the bad section. I ask this because I had a bad section of stringer about 48" just forward of the tank bulkhead to the cuddy that was rotten. I want to just replace and sister in a new section there with some PL or peanut butter and wood dowels then wrapped in glass. Does anyone see any issues with this?

I may not have done it the correct way, but I went back about a foot away from the rot into good wood. Cut the stringer and took out the bad, with about a foot of good on each side. Then I put in the new stringer, then tied it in to the good parts. I glassed that in the way it was described on here.
Someone posted a link somewhere on these forums to a video on U-tube showing replacing a portion of a bad stringer. That is how I did mine, following the video.

Okay. Thank you. I figure that most people are going to have a joint somewhere in there stringer anyway. Depending on the length and style of boat.

Re: My boat project.

Thought I would post an update.
Not much exciting happening with the boat. Ran out of materials, payday is a few days off, and with work won't be able to get more stuff till the weekend. So I have been spending my time cleaning. Scrubbed the side padding, armoralled everything, sanded all the woodwork and re-finished it. I started messing with the seats.
Does anyone know where I might find seat covers to hide the ripped vinyl until next summer/fall when I can get new seats, or repair these properly? I see Overtons has some, but they look thin and kind of cheap.

Re: My boat project.

You can get terry cloth seat covers right here on iboats or at overtons as you mentioned for $25 to $40 each. They are a little thin, but are great for covering up old seats...at least temporarily. I used a pair for a couple of seasons and they held up fine.

Re: My boat project.

Thanks. I have ordered parts from I-boats in the past with great results, don't know why I didn't think of looking here.
Or maybe I will just buy a couple of bath sheets and make some of my own. Have to do some checking to see what I can find.
Oh, and still no luck with the camera. Brand new batteries, snap one picture and the batteries are dead. Have tried several new batteries, several brands. Think the camera is finished. But will post pictures when I can. I am realy liking the way the cleaning and refinishing the woodwork is coming out.

Re: My boat project.

An update.
I got the deck down and glassed the way I learned on here. Got new carpet laid, sanded and refinished all the woodwork on the inside. The ski locker, steering wheel, and other small trim boards. I recovered the bolsters on each side with the leftover carpet instead of vinyl. I am guessing I will have to go ahead and vinyl them before too many years, the carpet might let moisture in and hold it. I will see how that works out when I get it going. I re-worked the engine cover so it looks good. It is in good shape except for the vinyl around the bottom. It was starting to rip and rot. I trimmed the rot and put a strip of wood trim along the bottom. I used dried, treated deck material and treated it with water seal. I will see how that holds up. Then I made the interior look bad again by putting the old torn up seats back in. Hopefuly next spring I will have the funds to get them recovered or replaced. but for now, I am going to make some covers.
The hole that was in the keel I think is almost patched up. I laid 3 coats of glass over the outside, then went to the inside when I had it all apart. I pulled out all the weatherizing foam the previous owner sprayed in the hole and ground it out clean and smooth. I sanded around the hole, sanded the backside of the patch I put on from inside the hull. I then filled the gap with Bondo brand short strand fiberglass putty. I let the set up good, sanded it smooth, roughed it up cleaned it and put 3 layers of glass over it. I am going to add one more layer to the outside to help smooth it, feather it out the paint the patch.
I was thinking that the hole in the keel caused the stringers and bulkhead to rot, but found out the hole was behind the bulkhead letting water leak right into the ski locker and back to the bilge. So, I started looking for where else water could have came in causing the rotten wood under the bow and the rotten stringers. I found a few causes. One, the vinyl gone off the front seats in the open bow allow water to soak through. I think the water drips through the foam and runs through the bolts holding the cusions down dripping into the hull. Also I found the rub rail on the front appears to have a gap in a few places. I think water was coming in under the cap at the bow.
I will see if my camera will work long enough to snap some pictures tomorrow. It goes through a set of batteries each picture. New batteries, snap one photo, batteries are dead and it shuts off.
Again, thanks for all the information and help on this. I hope next spring I will be able to get after it again and finish things up. But at least it will be safe to get back on the water again until then.
Especialy thanks to you Woodonglass, you have been a great help.
