Re: my 55hp johnson wont cut off
What year is your motor--or is that why you need to find the model number? I have a 1978 55 Johnson and my model number/specification plate is on the right side of the transom clamp (when standing behind the motor)in a square depression of the transom clamp itself. If it's like mine, it'll be something like 7855ESL (I can't remember the order exactly, but it's a string of numbers and letters like that, where 78 is the year (like mine) 55 is the HP, etc. I have a big "C" at the end of mind which I'm told makes it a commercial lower unit, but I really can't vouch for that one.

Anyway, that's where the model number is.

As far as the not shutting off problem. Mine did that about years ago, and the problem was that the keyswitch in the throttle/shift control failed. It was easy to tell, because when my father opened the control box, the thing keyswitch fell out in a couple dozen pieces.

It could also be that you have a shorted wire near the wiring terminal block on the motor head. Couldn't hurt to check.

You probably ought to get yourself a manual, though, cause if it's one of those "unknown electrical problems" you're gonna need it.

Good Luck.
