Musing about low tide...

First, let me state that I understand that tides are all about gravitational forces created by the moon as it relates to the Earth, etc. However, when you're living in Florida and there's a nasty little storm out in the Gulf, you start to wonder. It seems like the last time the tide dropped THIS low, was right before the last tropical storm that sliced up passed us and caused quite a bit of localized flooding. Hard to see in this pic, but;

I can usually never see rocks right there at low tide. And then there's my neighbor's sailboat that is hard aground;

Me standing on the dock looking UP at the boat on the lift. What the???

And then there's the "across the channel neighbor"'s dock;

We probably shouldn't have a party out there. I know this is crazy, but it's almost like these storms "suck out the water" right before they decide to put it all back in plus some. I hope this isn't the case, but I plan to move my car to higher ground anyway. Under all the neighbor's advice, the boat is staying on the lift, raised above the seawall, and the lift mechanism is strapped to the poles so it can't swing.

To everyone and anyone that's in the path, I hope and pray and everyone is safe, foremost. And at the least, there's minimal damage. I really worry about those poor folks in New Orleans if this thing goes the way they think it's going to go. Just like poor Haiti got hit again. Oh well.....tis the season I suppose.

I was just lookin' at the storm track before I logged on here ... I hope you're clear of the main punch (looks like it anyway), but I don't quite understand the surge that'll come along with the storm. We might get a little of the leftovers visiting us in a few days.

Me too, Rooster. You guys will be in my prayers as he sure looks "hell-bent" on coming your way. Feeder bands started here this morning, so we'll get yucky weather all day I suppose, but it still looks like we'll be just barely brushed. They're calling for 3'-4' above normal high tide which will cause some obvious flooding, but it could be a lot worse. Rooster, batten down the hatches, brother.

The best way for people to avoid being hurt or worse during a hurricane is to get the flock out of Dodge, take all of your loved ones and pets and get out of the path... this is why they have hurricane evacuation routes. You can replace material things, but not lives.

Any destruction (some destruction is inevitable with any hurricane) will put construction workers back to work so it isn't all bad.

I hope no one is hurt by this storm, but it's not like back in the old days when people didn't have any warning or just a very short warning. We've all been watching and tracking this storm for a week and there is plenty of warning and time to move to a safer area.

Just moved the boat to higher ground in the front yard; pretty soggy around back still from previous rain. Starting to get some elevated winds as the storm bands are coming through here.

Emoney, you and I are not gonna suffer too badly.

Rooster, you guys stay safe...looks like you're "it":confused:

Although, my tide is still out, lol. I'm sitting here trying to scare my wife by telling her it's getting sucked up by Isaac and it's all going to come rushing back at once! She doesn't believe me for some reason. We're both off work today, as the Schools closed (her) and my work texted me last night that we were going to be closed too. Now if the sun would come out, I could go boating.....ok, maybe not, but still.

Watch the water up there Richard. We were on the east side of the last storm and it sure did raise.

My boat is in our shop, along witheverything from the yard that can fly. I gotta go back to work tomorrow at noon and ride it out. Meanwhile the wife and 2 kids will ride it out at home. We made it through Katrina,Rita and Gustav with no problems this little thunderstorm should be a "breeze".

Water piles up somewhere, it must be low somewhere else...

Stay dry...
