murcury 650 timing belt replacment

i Recently got hold of a 1974 murcury 650. It was tore down to bare block but I got all the parts bought all the parts it needed timing belt fuel line carb kits fuel pump diagram. Any ways the hub was off the flywheel. I turned #1 tdc lined the mark on fist gear with flat notch on distributor set flywheel at 0 degree. It runs few seconds backfires and dies. I Do know I done somthing wrong. Can any one help me here
