I am trying to mount the trim unit for a 1979 evinrude 85hp. Do I need to loosen and remove the stern brackets in order to mount the unit between them, is there a trick or an easier way?

Re: Mounting trim unit?

it would be easier........ im not sure if it is possible without removing one of the brackets.

if you dont have a cherry picker (engine hoist) you can use a come-alomg and a good tree branch..... you may need a lil chain if the limb is too high.

if you are careful all you have to do is hook the eng up at the ring behind the flywheel. then you can take loose the trancom bracket bolts. then take loose the steering rod and with the bolts removed you should be able to seing the eng far enough to remove the steering rod. then you can take loose the big nut one the transom bracket and the bolts holding on your current tilt or hydraulic assist unit....... which ever you have............... this way you dont have to unhook the fuel lines or the electrical nor the remote cables.

if you have trouble getting things to re-align use the tilt/trim motor to pull it up into place.

i just replaced my motor a couple of days ago and it only takes an hour or so.

and the main tilt pin doesnt have to come completely out, only far enough for the bracket to slide a few inches so you can put in the unit.
