76 year old Newbie with 1975 vintage 70 hp Johnson motor in great shape. The power trim motor is shot and I removed the entire power trim kit. Now the motor won't stay locked in vertical position. Something must be missing from the locking device. The repair manual I have does not show any details. Am searching for a locking solution and/or replacement trim motor for this vintage motor. Help!

Re: Motor won't stay locked

I have an '81 70 hp Johnson with manual tilt. There is a bracket with a spring loaded locking devide that enages a rod when motor moves into down position. Without something to lock it down it would very dangerous to use! Going forward is ok but any reverse will send the motor up faster & harder than you could believe. Get a manual that covers both models to see what you need. I'l bet there is a dead parts motor with a good locking device out there real cheap.

ThreeHanded,

I've been looking for a trim unit for my boat, would you be willing to part with what you have? I have the same Evinrude engine...
Thanks

Re: Motor won't stay locked

I have a 75 115hp with manual tilt. When the motor is in the run position it latches onto the trim bar. It also has a trailer bar that comes down to hold the motor at a 45 degree angle and latches as long as the tilt/run lever is in the run position. I would personally fix the power tilt system you have or find the mounting assembly for one with manual tilt. Go to bombidiars (i know i screwed that up) and check out the parts assembly for your year with manual tilt as well. Hope that was helpful

Re: Motor won't stay locked

I know this isn't much help to you, but my 80hp evinrude has no power trim but does has a locking devise, I have never ran it locked, I prefer the motor to just raise up if I ever drag it on the bottom, if in reverse and I really give it the gas then yes the prop will come up but then I let off it settles back down just fine, seldemly do I ever use that much power in reverse.

Re: Motor won't stay locked

maybe some people got the set up confused .on my motors lock is in the up position and unlock settles on to your trim bars.can you imagine the damage you will cause if you have your motor solidly locked down and hit something substational?with t/t it will give enough after striking an object ,been there done that!on a couple of the motors i have it doesnt even say lock or unlock it says tilt.with the motor that took the t/t off did you leave or put anything back in its place as in shocks?this link shows the non t/t model ,you may have to search around but it clearly shows a hydrulic shock for a non t/t.http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=290d7e6d0517a20081324739516a3284 you will have to put in you year etc and follow directions, select 15 or 20 inch exhaust housing i believe.
