Motor will not start

Hello, ive got a problem with a friends 80's model johnson 35 hp that wont start after rebuild. (catch up: Motor over heated and locked up, (cloged water system) after cooled off was able to be turned over, but was not ran again and sat for 3 yrs.) ive replaced all the electrical parts, head and exhaust gaskets, and water pump. I do have spark on both plugs, and seems to have good compression (good strong pull). I have removed both plugs after tring to start and both were dry, checked fuel pump, and carb both clean no gum up. Also checked port for pump and have compression bursts when turned over. Ive gone over checks that i know but no luck, if any one out there can help with some trouble shooting checks to get me to a start up it would mean the world to me, and also know where i can get get a repair book cheap would also be great. Compression, spark and fuel is all it takes. If you have good spark and compression, try squirting some fuel mixture into the carb and see if it will fire for you. Maybe you have a carb problem, no fuel through needle and seat.
Sometimes you can get factory manuals on Ebay for a good price, make sure you use your model number to find the correct manual.

Another thought, did you remove the flywheel, is the flywheel in good shape, not sheared from sudden stop?

thanks for the reply, and forgot to add did have fw off to replace starter pack and sencer and found some rust build up the magnets from sitting so long. took a wire brush and very fine sand paper and buffed it clean, and as for any cracks or abnormals did not see any. i also did spray fuel directly in the throat but still nothing just some back fires. could there be any problems with the reed valves and or the pump. one more thing do you know what the compression pressure might be, going to check with a friend to see if he has a gauge. thanks for your time. scott

If it backfires, have you gotten the spark plug wires reversed?

as far as i know no, this engine has coils mounted on head cover. when i took every thing off i drew out each connector and which wire went to each respected hole, i will recheck this and even switch the plug wires for a quick check, even though i drew it out as to the old stuff, maybe new eqip. might be different. (and keep the checks coming heres the first one i over looked, and now one more step closer. thanks machinist)

Ok shot fuel down throat and switched plug wires and got back fires again. Any thing else to check

the plate for this motor is no longer there, i was going off mdl #j35rcsm, and also looked at j35rlcsm thru marine engine. On last leg if can will try to go the distance, otherwise bow out respectfully.

OK GOT EVERY THING TOGETHER AND THIS IS WHAT I GOT:

1. REMOVED FLYWHEEL AND REPLACED STARTER COIL AND SENSOR
a. REMOVED STATOR PLATE TO REPLACE COIL & SENSOR PLACED BACK IN SAME POSITION (HOLES) AS REMOVED
b. FOUND RUST BUILD UP ON MAGNETS ON FW USED WIRE BRUSH & 200 GRIT SAND PAPER AND BUFFED OUT
*(COULD THIS HAVE CAUSED A PROBLEM, THE RUST, CLEANING IT OFF, OR BOTH)
*(WOULD ANY ONE KNOW IF THERE IS A TIMEING ISSUE WITH THIS MOTOR)
*(NOTE: THIS IS NOT A TRUE ELEC. START MTR. ADD ON STARTER NO EXTRAS)
*(COULD FLYWHEEL BE OUT OF WACK SO TO SPEAK BECAUSE OF SITTING SO LONG - 3 YRS SINCE LOCK UP)
c. REINSTALLED FW AND LOCKED DOWN

2. MADE DIAGRAM DRAWINGS OF WIRE LEADS IN PLUG FRM COIL & SEN. AS TO THERE RESPECTED PLACING

3. REPLACED COIL PACKS & MADE SAME DIAG. DRAWINGS OF WIRE PLACEMENTS (TOP COIL BOTTOM COIL ETC)

4. REPLACED PWR PACK (NO MODS TO IT BOLTED ON, AND WIRES ALREADY IN PLUGS)

5. REMOVED EXHAUST CVR
a. CLEANED OUT WATER AREA OF CALCIUM BUILD UP, REMOVED CLOGS FRM INTAKES AND OUTLETS
b. SCRAPED AND BRUSHED OUT CARBON BUILD IN EXHAUST AREA

6. REPLACED GASKETS REINSTALLED CVR

7. REMOVED HEAD AND WATER CVR PLATE
a. CHECKED CYLINDERS FOR SCARING, GASHES, SCORCHING: BOTH CYLINDERS SMOOTH AND CLEAN
b. CLEANED OUT CLOGGED WATER INLET & OUTLET PORTS
c. REMOVED & REPLACED WATER DEFLECTORS
d. REPLACED THERMOSTAT AND ASSEMBLY

8. REPLACED WATER & HEAD GASKET - REINSTALLED WATER CVR AND HEAD

9. REPLACED FUEL LINES, AND 1 VAC HOSE

10. REPLACED ENTIRE WATER PUMP

WELL THATS ALL THAT WAS WORKED ON AND REPLACED, I HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN WITH A 20HP THE ONLY THING DIFFERENT IT DIDNT SIT FOR 3 YRS. SO IF THIS INFO CAN HELP NARROW DOWN PROBLEM GREAT. AGAIN I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE. BEST REGARDS SCOTT

PS FRIEND DID NOT HAVE COMPRESSON GAGE AUTO STORE WANTS 40 DAMN DOLLARS 30 MIN TEST. WHAT EVER

Well think i found problem, and please can someone give me the bad news. What is the compression of a 80's johnson 35 hp. Bought a gauge for myself------tested both cylinders got 90 psi on both. How bad is it,,,, let me know asap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would think it would at least start on 90#'s compression.
Did you run a spark test, 7/16" and bright blue spark and has a snapping sound?
Double check the wiring at the power pack, proper wire to top and bottom coil.
If the ign system is in good shape, squirting fuel in the carb should make it fire.
If the coil wires are crossed at the power pack, it would be like crossing the plug wires.

Did a spark test with a tester and with plugs, good spark. Checked all wiring, double checked with switching the puug wires, no start and was a little worse. Tried shooting fuel in carb still no start. I did find an old manuel at the library saw 1 no start problem with reed valuves. Pulled manifold and checked, nothing bent twisted or broke. Put all back together. Then compression test.

Don't know if your motor has one but when I worked on my Johnson I broke the key for the flywheel when I put it back on and wouldn't start. Drove me crazy. Mine was getting spark and fuel and had good compression. Took it to the shop and as soon as the flywheel was removed found the problem, broken key.
Replaced it put the flywheel back on and started right up.

You have spark if it jumped a 7/16" gap and was blue-white and snappy.
You have OK compression if it was 90 and even.
That leaves fuel. Backfiring to me usually means that the wires are switched or the flywheel key is sheared and the timing is off. Or the carb is clogged or set too lean.

Ok im back, tx-- havent had a chance to check the spark as of yet, but did get every thing ready to do it. As for the wires crossed have trippled checked all hooked up right. Now as for the fw i did pull it and ck the key, was not sheared. Did romove it and reinstall it, and also reset the coil and sensor and something changed. I placed the fw back on and turned it a few times, at first i seemed to be hitting something, so pulled fw back off and re checked the c & s. Nothing was hitting, but what i found seems to be when the throttle was turned to the start position the fw moved a little like it was still hitting something. From what i can tell the magnet (s) are catching the coil and moving the fw with the throttle. I pulled it thru a few times and no problems, one thing b4 i attempt a start up, its reguarding the float and which way it sits in the carb, want to make sure its right. One side is flat all around, the other side has the indention, wanted to find out which side faces down towards the bowl the flat side or the curved side. If someone could let me know thanks.

flat side up TX curved side down ... should fit into the shape of the bowl

also if you turn the carb upside down the float should sit level all the way around the bowl to body mating surface if it doesnt - adjust it to where it does
