motor trouble

i inherited a boat this summer and it hasnt ran for about ten years. i got it started right away and it seemed to run fine. i then took it out on the lake and at first it ran good but it stalled when i put it into reverse i could get it to run in reverse but it took a few tries. after running it for awhile it has a hard time idling, there is a bit of fuel leaking from the linkage from all three carbs where the throttle joins them. i took it in and got three carb kits installed. and a service on the engine i got the boat back and took it out and it seems to run worse now it has a vibration in the motor now just before the boat goes up on plain and all of a sudden the vibration disappears instantly and the boat gains some noticable hp, but the boat lacks hp all togeather though. the boat also lost a lot of rpms too it should be around 5500 rpm at full throttle but it runs at 4300 now it ran good when i first brought it out. there is also a little leak of fuel when i prime the line where it conects to the engine, and it still leaks from the carbs in the same spot too. the motor is a 85 mariner 115 hp inline 6, new prop, it had a copresion test and it was good also. the machanic that i dealt with seemed like he fed me a bunch of bull crap. im wondering if someone out there has some info or anything for me.

Re: motor trouble

You have already answered what is wrong with your engine.

if theres gas leaking there a good chance there is air getting in, mixing to much with the fuel, thats no good it has to mix in the proper ratios. That is what the carb does, mixes gas and air in just the right amount and feeds it to the engine. The primer ball/hose can not leak also for the engine to run right.

There is NO way the mechanic should give it back to you with all those fuel leaks. Gas does catch fire ya know. Also it leaks into the water : ( . He is a scammer or incompetent either way find another one to fix it right.
