Motor swap

Thanks for having me on here!!! Been creeping around and reading some post and realize you people know more than me so I have a question. Sorry if this is wrong forum, but I do have a pontoon. I have a 96' Johnson 50 2stoke and I have a 1989 evinrude 150 xp that has been rebuilt. Can I swap to the evinrude with all my omc controls and plugs on the pontoon that were for the johnson or will there be some hang ups? Thanks for any help and I love the site!

Second, since you have both motors, just take a look. :behindsofa: I bet they'll be the same if not really close. Any swap will require Some adjustments.:juggle:

the 96 may be a black plug harness, the 89 should be a red plug if both are red its plug and play if they are different you can buy an adaptor or get a matching harness. 96 was the change over year and some of each were made.

I just put a '94 150 Johnson on my pontoon and took a '78 Evinrude 140 off. The motor wiring was plug-and-play but I looked close to make sure the pins were the same in the plug. The '94 had a VRO oil system so I just disconnected it and I run mixed gas-oil. There are several threads in the Johnson - Evinrude section on how to do this. The only thing I had to modify was the trim controls. The older 140 Evinrude used a three wire trim motor and a external relay pack while the later model Johnson motor used relays in the motor. Basically, the older motor used external trim controls whereas the newer motor uses internal trim controls. If both of you're motors have trim relays up at the top front inside the motor, you probably won't have to make the modification I did. When I went the other way and put the '78 model 140 on the '94 boat I had to build a relay pack with two relays. Being an HVAC/controls guy figuring out switches, controls and relays are second nature so it wasn't a problem.

You should be fine on the tilt/trim I believe that the changeover was in 79, good point on the VRO system MaPaHa. You can add a oil tank and wiring harness if you want, or you can simply disconnect it and pre mix. I believe that the adapter between the red and black plugs are about 150.00 so its not to bad if you need to go that way.
