I have a 1963 75HP johnson motor. The motor runs great when idling but put it in gear and it will stall.Motor has been in storage for about 20 years.

Re: Motor stalls

I would try taking the carb down soaking it in solvent and rebuilding it. Probably should change fuel pump diaphragm too. You should be able to get repair kits easily.

Re: Motor stalls

As Scoti sugjested, it may be a carb gooed-up.
Before attempting to place this motor in service, it's very important to do as he said, and replace the impeller also. The reason for this is all three contain neoprene. It's good for 1 season tops, without useage.
My guess is that your motor is missing on one cylinder. They run pretty good like this, until you put any load at all on them, at which time, they stall.
The impeller will work for a short time, but them fly appart inside the housing, sending pieces into the cooling ciruit where it gets lodged. I've had to tear heads and manifolds off,and dig those pieces out. Trust me on this one. Now is the time to replace it.
