I have a 1985 85hp Force. The motor was sitting for a year or two when i got it. I got the motor running, changed the lower seals, cleaned the carbs, put on a new ignition coil for top cylinder, put on new stater, and the compression is 125,120,125 top to bottom. anyway. the day before i took the boat on the water i had it running. the morning before i started it up again to make sure it was running good, and it was. i get out to the water. start the boat at the dock, and after everybody was in we took off on our maiden voyage i got about to the marker and the boat started spitting and sputtering, then finally conked out. So my first trip out and i got stuck in the cahnnel. I had to be towed back to the dock, and went home with my tail between my legs. The question finally is: Where do I begin? what should i start looking for the problem? any suggestion will help. oh yeah, i bout the seleco book, and it should be here today.. Thanks

There is an overtemp alarm on most motors over 30? hp.
Your motor has one, unless someone removed it.

Alarm will sound of motor is starting to overheat. (usually caused bo waterpump failure or water flow restriction)

Re: Motor putted out

Hi...I've got the same motor (a 1989 version though) and have had some of the same problems...It easy to change the water pump impellor....1st time took 90 minutes cause I couldn't find the da-n bolt hidden up inside the exhaust snout...you WILL need a manual to do the job, be VERY careful which linkages you remove and do yourself a favour and take a digital photo of how it looked before you took it apart...anyway after the 1st time you'll be able to do it in 30 minutes....as for the overheat alarm...my motor has the sender on the motor but no horn at the helm...your's might be the same....can you advise if your's idles OK...I'm having a heck of a time with it quitting at idle....
Tim

Re: Motor putted out

well i didn't hear any alarms anywhere. the only guage on my console is the fuel gauge. I thought it might be the impeller, but i do not know for sure. as far as the engine idleing, well it was idling good before everything, and i have'nt had time to look at it yet since my miss-hap.. i did order the book, and it should have been here by now. I paid for the 3 day shipping, but i guess i got ripped on that one. if it isn't here tommorrow i will call and see. I appreciate the feedback on this issue, this is our first boat, and actually the first time i really ever drove a boat by myself, so i am still learning.
