Motor is sputtering, not idling good

1997 Johnson 50/35 jet. Motor ran great ~2 weeks ago when out on the river, but in the beginning of my fishing trip, I must of hit a suspended log or something, and damaged the jet. I had to limp back to the boat launch (about 1/4 to 1/3 throttle for about 20 minutes). Since then, I fixed the jet and while I had it off, I also replaced the water pump. I took the boat out this weekend for a test run, and the water pump and jet both seemed to work fine, but my problem now is that the motor idles kind of rough and when I try to give it throttle, just kind of sputters like it either missing or starving for fuel come about half throttle. If I go from idle to full throttle quickly, it will rev up nice and smooth for a spit second, but sputter again. It is oil injected, and runs kind of smokey when trying to run it full throttle. I am going to check compression and spark and replace the fuel filter while I'm at it, just want to try everything while I'm at a lake since I can't really hook up a motor flusher or something of the sort. Thanks...

Welcome aboard iboats smyrt!!

While yer' at it, check your fuel connections and make sure they are all tight. Good idea to check compression and spark.

Keep us posted as to what you find.

If I find a spark plug that is not firing or only firing intermittenly, what can I expect the problem to be if not the wire or plug?

Turns out the problem was not the motor, but the linkage to the outlet of the jet was adjusted incorrectly causing it to partially block flow of water and exhaust enough to cause the problems.
