what should i use to clean it out (trans fluid maybe?)

You don't have to flush it with anything, if it's empty, fill it up (from the bottom) and use it.

cool, glad i changed the impeller, the old one was shot. got the thing to fire, but I think my distributor cap is toast. No one in Fort worth has one, so i'll order it here. i tried to doctor up the old one, and made things worse. Boats need to be used often! :(

I think you need to slow down and do it right the first time and Do a FULL tuneup, don't just piece-meal it together or you will be fighting different problems all summer long, instead of boating.
