"Any grease is better than no grease at all", I heard a wise man say......:D

My idea with the WD40 was it is thin and will go into areas that plain oil will not. I have also heard of diesel fuel also being used for this. Same idea, try to free up the rings with a thin lubricant. Once things are moving then squirt the heavier oil into the cylinder. I have used WD40 for this many times and has worked for me. While I agree it may not be the best lubricant, I think it is good for this application.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Diesel fuel is an excellent idea. The idea of the ATF is its detergent and the additional seeping down the cylinder walls and giving a pre crank lube.

I've heard the atf idea before, but was afraid to try it.

hehe
Its is oil and its detergent qualities are out of this world.
People are so lazy and cheap these days they often leave their oil changes on their cards for much longer than they should. Some engine just start to sludge up bigtime. I have used atf in place of engine oil to run through engines (not driven on road or with load on the engine really) to free gummed up lifters, clean oil galleries etc.... this is a fairly common practice in place of your high dollar "internal engine cleaners" available on the market.
There are fluids, additives, ding dong tools and all sorts of utter BS on the market for all types of jobs the industry has you thinking you need to use.

Some are very good products with inflated prices that have alternative, basic normally used products that will do the same or similar job. This fluid is better than that, my oil is better than yours, this grease is only for this application and never for that. It all needs to be looked at with reason.

My dad had a old 1971 Buick Riviera he installed an engine in years ago. The customer parked the car not long after the engine was installed and it sat for 10 plus years. Engine wouldn't turn over at all when he got it. Pulled plugs dumped diesel fuel down the cylinders and for a week or so when we had time we would rock the crank back and forth till the rings unseated themselves. Once that was acheived we slowly a step at a time we had a chance rotated the crankshaft pouring atf into the cylinders. Once it was spinning freely we drained all the oil out and put a little atf in the cylinders cranked it over and put plugs back in and it ran for a good number of years with all us kids running the heck out of that poor car when we had the chance.
Moral of the story is no fancy tools, no special lubricants just basic stuff and some time. We could have easily pulled the engine (well a 455 engine pull is most often not easy.......) and rebuilt it but there was no need if we got the rings unseized.

OK, got it spinning over. Did a compression test and got 160 on number one. 150 on 2 and 3, and 120 on number 4. the last one worries me some. any thoughts on that one?

Ayuh,........

Run It..........

After a few hours of Run Time,...... Check it again.......

It could be as simple as tight rings,..... Or maybe it's just alittle Tired......

Sounds like a good plan. Its a good running motor. boats need to run to stay in good shape.

Re: Motor has been sitting for 3 years.

I had the same problem with my Volvo, was sitting for a few years. Two holes were at 155, while the other two were at 90 and 120. Took it out a couple of times, and redid the compression test. This time all holes were around 155. That happens when engines sit around for a while.

Take it out and enjoy it and then redo the compression test.

Have a great day,

Rob.

OK, as an update. Motor is spinning fine now, but I have no fire to the distributor. I get 12V on pos and neg with the points open AND closed. bad coil?

Re: Motor has been sitting for 3 years.

Put in some new points, actually, do a full tuneup and it will probably run fine.

The points are probabaly all glazed over, corroded, and junk from sitting.

Thanks Don, I'll do that this weekend. The points do look suspect, so they needed changing anyway.

Re: Motor has been sitting for 3 years.

Ok, the points did the trick. Now for the outdrive. I'm going to replace the impeller, but I figured I'd pull the whole outdrive and check the bellows, and grease the u-joints. anything else I should grease and/or inspect?

Re: Motor has been sitting for 3 years.

Be sure to check the engine alignment. with an alignment bar. If the alignment is off, you WILL loose the coupler and have to replace that$350 part, and you will have to pull the engine to do it.
Here is a link to the OEM service manual you can download. Just scroll down to the outline and click on the letter of the section you want to look at.
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6covr3.pdf

Section 3B will cover the water pump. And don't forget the quad ring.

Re: Motor has been sitting for 3 years.

I just clicked it and it works for me. Do you have Adobe Acrobat reader on your computer? It's a .pdf file.

PS: You want section 3C, not D like I stated earlier

That's a lot different than file not found, like I said before, scroll down to the outline (page 7) and click on the section letter you want to open.

it was just the viewer I was using. It would give me the outline, but would not pull up any of the links. Working great now, many thanks!

Re: Motor has been sitting for 3 years.

well. i guess the guy I bought this from drained the lower unit oil, and never refilled it. what should i use to clean it out (trans fluid maybe?) i'll put it thru the top and let it drain out.
