Re: motor goes up , but

Hi,

Any chance of some further info to help us help you... Let's start with make and model (big difference in fault finding between a Volvo and a Mercruiser), and how about some extra details, like does the trim pump run when you try to trim down or is it just silent, or maybe there's just a clicking noise.

All the techs on this board are good, but they can't read minds.... help them out just a little and you'll be surprised how much knowledge they do have.....

Are we even talking about a sterndrive? I see your Tron has an outboard.

No, it is a boat that we are looking at to buy. It is a 1979, 19 ft Galstron, mercruiser lower end. The lower end will tilt down about half way, then it stops. As long as you are holding the switch the pump with continue to run. It is not making any clicking noises. Just sounds like the pump is free-spinning.

Put some oil in the trim pump.

Sorry Don, this is one of those rare times that I'm going to disagree with you. I think this one of not lack of fluid. As the leg goes down the fluid volume in the pump inceases. No, I think he may have a bent ram or a corroded ram end cap. The system pressure for DOWN is only about 1200-1500 psi, for UP it's 3000 psi, so the UP pressure can overcome obstacles the DOWN may not be able to. Would be nice to know which series rams he's looking at.

Tron, When the leg stops moving, does the pump sound like it's running faster, or is it labouring more?

Yea, I was reading that a little bass ackwards. Not the first time.
Wait till he finds out the motor doesn't actually go up and down, only the outdrive

It needs to go down about 8 more inches. It does labor more at that point.

I just had the same problem on my boat - turned out the trim cylinders were stuck pretty well. The extra pressure on the up direction was able to move them up, but the weaker pressure of down could not. Replaced the cylinders and it's all good now.

Here is an example of a site where you can get them:
http://www.ebasicpower.com/c/MER3E/

Genuine Merc cylinders are $299 each, generic (GLM) ones are $219. Depending on your issue, you may be able to get by with just replacing some parts as opposed to the whole thing (they have parts at that link too). You can also check eBay (that's what I did and got lucky).
