[/IMG]I have a 1975 17' Mon Ark fiberglass boat and i am going to replace the transom since it has rotted. The question i have is:

What type of fiberglass do I need to use to rebuild the transom? Should i use biaxial or regular and what weight? This is my first attempt at glassing and I know I can do it, I just am unsure of the material type to use. Any help is appreciated.

I will post pics as i go along with the project.

After a morning full of researching, I believe you are exactly right. Hardest part will be cleanup, but isnt it always.

Thanks so very much and I'll post pics as I go!!

It is in terrible shape. The only thing "sealing" the top of the transom was the cap that goes around the boat. . . . no epoxy, no glass just open and bared wood. Luckily, the floor fees remarkably solid as do the outer corners of the transom where it transitions into the hull.

I'm leaning more and more towards using Seacast. Seems the only drawback with the stuff is the price. Once it's done, tho, I'll be done with transom repairs. I will have to be sure to seal all areas that join into the transom well so no rot will begin anywhere else.

I'll probably be starting the repair process in a week or so. My kids will be back in school and it will be easier to focus on the repair.
