My 96 115 4 cyl is the Merc 2 + 2 system.
The motor idles on only the top 2 cyl's, the bottom 2 carbs do not have idle fuel passages adequate for the bottom cyls to fire until the throttle has begun to open to allow more air/fuel to the bottom cyls.
Link and synch according to the factory service manual is critical for these motors to perform well at just 'off idle' settings, otherwise you will never notice any difference in performance.
