I live here in las vegas(sin city) kinda, and over the years the Merry Christmas has gone and been replaced with Happy Holidays,This really sucks for me.I have googled Christmas from the first tree to the old saint nick and learned alot.Christmas is Christmas and yes its a holiday season but its Christmas right? If this keep happening there gonna be no more lights, trees or things of this nature I think. Kinda like Halloween where before the kids could leave the house and trick or treat and have fun, but now your scared if they walk 2 houses down.If Christmas can be broken down just imagine what can come to fishing and boating! We in trouble right?

Re: Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays???

Myself, my family and my friends........... We are all Merry Christmas people ;) We do not care if we offend, we are not politically correct........ we are all Christians of one form or another and not merchants trying to hack our products.

I will admit there has been a decline in Christmas lights however, I think it is because people are getting old and no longer do ladders ;) and the other significant reason here in VT is the weather. Depending on how the weather is pre-Christmas makes a big difference on the amount of decoration.

I have to admit...... I think "social media" has harmed the greeting card industry.

I am a stanch believer in Christmas, but I don't mind Happy Holidays ... When you break down the meaning of Christmas, it is a holy day to me, and isn't that where holiday came from? Holy day? If someone wishes me a happy festivus day, or a happy kwanza day, or ... I am just happy they thought enough of me to greet me.

Peace, love and understanding wished even to those who attempt to reduce the joy most everyone feels over the holidays.

I am a Christian and I say Merry Christmas. I don't really care what anyone else says. I am not offended until you start telling me I can't.

I grew up in an multicultural city (Washington, D.C.) and spent my career working on the international scene which exposed me to a multitude of cultures and beliefs.

I have friends and colleagues covering the gamut of the worlds religions and beliefs so happy holidays is the appropriate way to express my well wishes for the holidays. In private, I address a person's belief on an individual basis

Means the same thing to me for the most part, religious aspeck or end of the year and time to reflect back on the year yourself, family and friends.

As for Christmas traditions, they are a combo of many cultures and religions over the ages, if it makes you happy go for it.

Re: Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays???

Dunno' if I can pull this off without going "over the edge," (Mods, feel free to carve):

I prefer "Christmas" to "Holidays." However most well wishing I do is across the scope of Christmas & New Year combined, so I often jump phrases. The particular holiday is "Christmas," though … not "Holiday." Why celebrate it if you don't appreciate CHRISTmas? I don't deny someone of a different faith their holiday (Shavat, Ramadan, Hanukkah, etc.), but I don't really participate either. If I have a close friend who I know celebrates a particular holiday that I don't I may wish them a happy ___________ (what-have-you), but in general I leave the holiday alone.

Christmas is ultimately a product of Christian culture (origins are a little sordid, but lean toward a church holiday), and I personally feel it's rightful place is as Christmas - not holiday. If ya' don't wanna' celebrate it … don't. But I don't like the intentional stripping away of what is the rightful structure of the day and season.

Probably as far as I can go without gettin' us locked down. ;)

I do by best to practice the "spirit" of the season and as such I use whichever I deem most appropriate for the people or persons I may be speaking to. I will not force my beliefs upon you and I most assuredly will not allow you to force yours on me.

And now I will venture towards the edge mentioned above, "Dunno' if I can pull this off without going "over the edge," (Mods, feel free to carve):"

Christmas is an adaption of the pagan winter solstice holiday. When they could not kill it it was adapted into a religious holiday.

Re: Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays???

We have just gone waaaay to far on political correctness. If someone were to say to me "Happy Ramadan", should I, as a Christian, be offended? I say heck no and would gladly say "happy Ramadan to you, too!" right back to them. I am not offended if someone says happy whatever to me for something I do not celebrate. Why do people get so bent out of shape on Merry Christmas, then? I will never understand it. Just seems no one is tolerant of others anymore.

Re: Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays???

One year I sent cards out to my clients saying Merry Christmas and a couple people were offended. The next year I sent them out saying happy holidays and people were offended. Now I don't send out any cards. It's to bad. People are way to sensitive and many are just out looking for something they can perceive offends them so they can jump up and down and complain about something.

Re: Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays???

This remind me of a interaction I had a few years ago. Was a few days before Christmas and I was standing in line at one of the box stores. I started chit chatting with the gentleman in front of me. Just mostly small talk that turned slightly political.

After our transactions were completed I wished him a merry Christmas, he turned to me and said happy Hanuka. We shook hands and gave each other a nod of approval as we parted ways.

That's the way it should be. You live your way, I'll live mine, and we don't have to do more than respect each other.

Political correctness is all about semantics. One must look for the meaning in a greeting, not dissect it, looking for insult.

To me, "Merry Christmas!" and "Happy Holidays" are identical expressions of goodwill no matter whom they originate from.

Either way is fine with me and will be cheerfully returned. Getting too hung up on semantics isn't really in the spirit of the season.

Re: Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays???

Celebrate the solstice! After all, it's the real reason for all mid-winter holidays (in the Northern hemisphere anyway). There was record turn out at Stonehenge this year, in fact. Besides the more you look into the "Christmas" tradition the less "there" is there. If you actually read the Bible, most folks don't bother, you first have to decide which "infallible", yet utterly contradictory version you're going to use (did he go to Egypt or not? depends which "gospel" in which version of the bible you read; protestant, catholic, eastern orthodox, even the Qur'an. Each have differing accounts, so you'll have to decide which one you like best). Most folks go with Luke ("for unto you a child is born...") in the NKJV, but there are of course other versions.
You'll then soon realize there is no St. Nick, no tannenbaum, no candy canes, no weasel, nor would there have been shepherds "watching their flock by night" in December in Palestine b/c it's freezing and winter, oh and there weren't "three" wise men, just wise men, no specific number is given. Neither will you find any mention of mistletoe toe, eggnog, christmas ham (Jesus was a kosher Jew after all, if not THE kosher Jew). If most "All American" families were to see how my family German family celebrates christmas you wouldn't recognize half of it, and yet the traditions are much older and, in fact, little more than good ol' Pagan nature worshiping traditions, hence the evergreens in winter ("deck the halls with boughs of holly......"). Then there's Krumpus from my other grandparents home in Austria. Not exactly Norman Rockwell. Oh, and what about folks in Australia (Southern Hemisphere) where it's now the middle of summer and Santa comes to town on a surf board? Some how tales of snow flakes, jingle bells and yule logs gets lost. Shoot, they're silly here in Florida. Although, I am proud to say we have our own Festivus pole!
Of course, then there are the pesky issues of how dates and calenders have changed and been misinterpreted over the years. Again, the more you look the less you find.
The Solstice on the other hand is as constant as, well the stars, has been studied and revered the world over from the beginning of time and is also a real measurable phenomena with benefits for one and all as any and all of my gardener friends will know. Spring will be here any day now.........

In other words, this :

most definitely did NOT happen :)
