MERCURY prop question

i have 1989 40 hp mercury classic 4 cylinder and it has a prop on it 14 pitch and my friend a brand new prop he don't wants but its 17 pitch if i put it on my motor well it do me good or bad

Need to know your present max rpm and speed.Also what kind of boat and
weight. My uninformed guess is no but based only on the pitch.

I agree with the above post. If your motor was running as it should on the 14 inch pitch, then adding 3 inches of pitch will indeed do your motor harm as well as harming your hole shot.
