Hi. I have a 1970 20hp 2 stroke Mercury outboards. I have not heard it running and I believe it has not run for a few years. I have it on a engine stand and in a large barrel of water. Where to start? I have check the plugs and I am getting sparks on them both. I am thinking maybe clean the carb? Can anyone help. Regards Titchr1

Thanks.... Just got to get it running and I should be able to confirm if the water pump running. Do you think I should change the impeller because it has not run in a while?

Correct the fail due to age.-----That motor has no warning system to tell you it is overheating.----It does not have a shutdown feature to prevent damage if it starts to run hot !!----Your choice of $25 for impeller or a new motor.

A bit of advise. When you do get to the point of starting in a barrel you hsve to make sure the water level is above the height of the impeller. The impeller is not self priming and you will burn it up quickly if the water is below the impeller level.
