On the control box with key ignition and no tilt or trim in the handle. The handle will not shift the motor into reverse or forward. The cables are good and have been checked out by a marine mechanic, he said the control box would need to be replaced as it was bad.

Now my question is 2 fold.

#1. Can you replace the parts inside of the control boxes without having to replace the whole box.

#2. Are the control boxes set up in such a way inside that they will fit say a variety of years of motors or do you have to order one specific for your year and make of motor?

Now I am ASSUMING Johnson will not fit a Yammy or a Mercury etc. So you would have to stay with in your brand of motor but wanting to know if they will work say for a span of 10 years, 15 years of motors etc.

Thanks guys

It is a 1985 Mercury 35 hp

Re: Mercury Control box

Before replacing the control box, disconnect both cables (throttle and shift) from the motor. That will determine 100% if the cables or shifter are the problem.

As for your questions

1) Yes, but good luck finding the parts for an old unit like that. You are better off buying a complete replacement unit off ebay. They are available on there all the time.

2) Controls are pretty much interchangeable, mechanically, across the Merc family BUT the wire harness has changed format several times over the years.
