I recently purchased a Classic 50 serial 0b201??? and the tilt does not work. I do not know how to manually raise the motor to check the fluid level. When I open the reservoir, which is located on the motor, it spewed red fluid. The motor seems to be operational and makes a whirring noise when you push the up trigger.

Re: Mercury Classic 50 Tilt Issue

We figured it out, on the right side of the motor mount there is a hex head screw with a screwdriver slot. Loosen this screw until you can pull up the motor by hand. Once up, lock the motor into the upright position with the support / lock bar which is on the left of the motor. If you are having issues determining why the motor wont go up try checking the oil in the tilt reservoir to ensure you have a sufficient amount of oil or apply 12 volts power to each of the wires for up and down. There are 2 switches on the left side of the motor, the top is up and the bottom is down. I found that the right side of each switch is energized with 12 volts. One at a time, remove the left wires from switch and apply 12 volts directly from a battery, you will find that the wires will be blue or green and will run directly to the tilt pump. The motor should make a high pitched noise. In my case the switch was energized but not functioning properly and had to be replaced. Good luck.

Re: Mercury Classic 50 Tilt Issue

I'm also working on this issue with a '90 90hp. My motor is also working but there is no lift. The motor has to be full up before opening the fill plug of the reservoir (pressure is taken off). I opened the manual release valve and managed to get the motor to the full up poisition and brace it. The manual says there is supposed to be an 0 Ring between the top of the plug and the tank. I'm not seeing one and hope this is the probelm (leaking a bit of air thus losing pressure?). The manual release valve does not seem to want to come full out and there are 2 or 3 0 Rings on the end of this valve as well that might need replacing. After topping the reservoir, the "down" would work properly but the "up" still has no lift. Next step is to attach a pressure guage and see if the up generates a min. 1300 psi and the down a min. of 500 psi. To be continued.
