Mercury alternate serial number location?

Anyone out there know if Mercury puts the serial number in an alternate location than the label on the transom bracket so the number can be located when the label is missing?

i remember taking the numbers off the freeze plug - on a motor i bought from a marina - the sticker was gone when i picked it up. there were 2 letters missing on mine but the dealer was able to figure that out from the #'s

Earlier models had the number stamped into the top of the engine block. Later ones the aluminium disc on the side of the block, usually low down.
