Mercury 60hp Shifting Question

I have a 2003 Mercury 60hp 2 stroke.

Is it normal to hear a racheting sound when shifting from Neutral into Foward gear and sometime Reverse Gear.

I hear this sound mainly when the boat is out of water with the hose on it.

Hi,

Yes, it is normal.
However shift it firmly into gear.
Shifting it slowly will chip your clutchdog
and gears causing problems you don't want
or need.
