Mercury 50hp year ID?

Hey all,

My friend has what appears to be a 80s model Mercury 50hp outboard that he wants to service, but we haven't had any luck figuring out the year based on the serial number so we can get the corect parts. I'm not sure if it's because this was a Canadian made motor, but none of the serial charts start with a 71. This is a 2 stroke 4 cylinder.

Anyone have an idea of what year this motor might be? Any info would help, thanks.

1982, perfect. How did you identify that?

We're in Kingston, Ontario. To be honest I'm not entirely sure what he needs, we were just chatting briefly and he mentioned that he didn't know the year, so I offered to try and help. From what he told me it runs fairly well, although apparently it doesn't like to low idle.
