mercury 25 h.p. transom lock

I have a 2002 merc 25 2str. When you put the engine in forward gear the locking pawl that engages the pin comes loose.There is a rod attached to the locking pawl that moves up to pull the pawl away from the pin as you increase the throttle in forward gear.Is this normal?--or is there something out of adjustment.I have never noticed it before but it appears dangerous if you were heading across the lake at any speed and decided to back off on the throttle.

It should only lock when in reverse so the motor doesn't raise when you give it gas. It doesn't lock in fwd so the motor will raise if you hit something.

Thanks for the answer--i kind of thought that might be it but i wasn't sure --better to ask i guess--i couldn't find the answer in my manual(aftermarket)-----Again thanks

I have the problem on my +- 1983 25h.p. Mariner that when I put the motor in FWD the lock does not release. Where is the adujustment for this? And can anyone tell me where I could find a manual for this old outboard.

You need to start a new theard as this one is from 2009 . A service manual can be bought here on Iboast and several other web sites. The tilt latch link has gotten bent or the stop on it has moved. Check Similar Threads listed below for more info as just what could be wrong.JMO
