I have a 2005 Mercury XL 200EFI. The moter always starts straight up and idles fine without failure. The intermittant problem I have is that when giving it throttle to get on the plane or when on the plane at speed the motor just stops. It is just like activating the kill switch. No missing or surging or any indication at all that something is amiss. Just stop. It can happen 10 times in just a few minutes after actually finally getting up on the plane or when attempting to get on the plane. Then it can be fine straight after for the rest of the day, or it can occur at times. Totally intermittant. The motor always starts straight away after each failure with a turn of the key. The problem never happens when idling or traveliing at just a few knots.

I have tried disconnecting the wiring at the kill switch and this did not solve it. Any suggestions on how to ascertain the cause will be greatly appreciated.

Andrew.

Re: Mercury 200EFI stops suddenly

If you can make it fail running on the trailer backed down a boat ramp, attach a test light to the the purple wire after barrel connector. It should be on when key is on and if it goes off when engine quits it a bad ignition switch. Also what is you charging voltage as overcharging will cause fuel pump /ECU problems...
