Mercury 2000 Optimax 200 Engine alarm

My 2000 Optimax 200 was completely rebuilt 23 months ago. It has 40 hours on it.
This past weekend I was returning from a fishing trip and the alarm came on continuously. I added oil to the reservoir and restarted the engine. The alarm came on after approximately 10 seconds. Turned off the engine and checked the engine oil reservoir, it was full. Waited a few minutes and restarted. After 5 seconds the alarm came on and the check engine light came on. The rpm dropped to approximately 500 - that was it. I ran at 500 rpm for 14 miles back to the launch.
The oil alarm never came on. Any thoughts or comments that may help?

OK, you filled the engine reservoir or the boat-mounted reservoir, or both? Was the engine oil reservoir full? Was the motor overheating? What else can that alarm signify?
