I'm curious how I get the steering cable out if the engine mount? It won't pull through. It get like 3/4 then binds. It doesn't look bent and I sanded it a little to get the rust build up off. But it will not come out. Also if anyone knows of a manual I can get for free that would be awesome
Pics aren't the best can get better today

If the steering rod is bent or mushroomed, it will jam in the tilt tube, as you are seeing. Since the cable is cut off and ruined, drive the steering rod out to port and grind it smaller or cut it off.

You will want a factory service manual. Try Mercury marine.
yup found it. thank you. im gonna order it but in the mean time where is the serial number located on these? i had googled it and it told me a spot but i dont see it there and all my other outboards have a plate on the lower section of the engine.

It should be on the transom bracket, in the front top. The thumb screws on your motor were a bit different than the ones on my '77 Merc 1500. Decals were the same. You may therefore have a 1976 motor.

The factory service manual I had covered all Merc motors from about 1980, back to 1971. They were grouped in sections, by topic. For example, all motors with battery powered CDI /distributor ignitions, like you have, were grouped together in a particular timing/synchronization section.

It worked OK, since the link and synch procedure for il4 and il6 motors with battery powered CDI/distributor ignitions were the same. Timing specs were a bit different, and were listed in tables in the sections..

Someone has put 1150 decals on the trim plate and a front cowl piece from a 1972; the lower unit appears to be new style but the powerhead is pre-Thunderbolt, I see coils and a points distributor - you'll need the 1939-1965 manual and the serial Nr.
The distributor uses 2 sets of points but you must remove the red piece on the distributor before you take the cap off to inspect them. The plug wires screw into the cap don't pull them out.
My guess is it's a 1965 100 or 90 hp.

as Merc 850 said, that motor is the best "FrankenMerc" I have ever seen. That silver block means it is old, pre 70's.

@merc850 @Chris1956 thank you guys for the info. I havent got a chance to go out and look to see the s/n for it. This is all very helpfull! The fact you guys think its less than 115hp is the best thing. My boat is only rated for 100hp max. I was just going to reniforce my transom a little bit for the 115hp now i dont.

Pre Thunderbolt?
The Thunderbolt engine came out in 1949.
Later on, Thunderbolt was a reference to the Ignition System.

Being that the Control Cables are attached inside the Cowl, indicate that it is 1965 or newer, the upper cowl is pre 68

Merc used to put the Serial # on a plate on the Swivel Bracket, and on an Aluminium Disk that looks a bit like a core plug

I can not find the serial number to save my life. I have looked everywhere no plates or discs. Unless I'm just blind. It does look like it was painted maybe at one point but you would think I'd still see it. He is some more pics.

The wrap around cowling appears to be from a 1965 model.----Distributor certainly is from that era as well.
