Mercruiser Skeg Protector Needed?

I'm a first time boat owner and I was looking into purchasing a skeg protector for my mercruiser on my tahoe q4. Are these good to have as a percautionary thing or are they just a waste of money? thanks in advance!

They do not "Protect" the skeg, as much as they are a replacement for a partially broken skeg.
They are not needed if your skeg is still good.

Ok...thanks, makes sense. My skeg is fine just some paint chips, is replacing a skeg an expensive fix?
