Mercruiser MC-1 trim will not go down

I took the fittings off the cylinders and I still have to stand on the drive to get it to go down. The cylinders are real stiff, is this normal?

Had a similar problem with mine.
Take them apart and check them out. Mine turned out to be a bad O-ring. Simple fix. Factory manual covers them in detail.

Second that. You deffinately have a problem in one or both of your cylinders. With the lines removed the drive should fall on it's own. I'd bet it's more than an o-ring though.

Is there an exploded drawing of these cylinders online? I think someone put the piston in backwards causing it to damage the aluminum nut assembly on the end of the shaft.

Concave end of the floating piston should face that nut to allow clearence.

I fixed it, the only way this sort of damage could have happened is if someone backed the boat into a garage, etc. I had to remove the end caps and file the ID's at the very end to free it up on the shaft. They both were extremely tight.
