Hi all!
Recently purchased 85 bayliner 2450 ciera. Doing many repairs to her.....I've started a restoration thread.
The motor only has 300hours(or so the meter says)...However, it has a mercruiser thermostat housing and merc. mans/risers. The risers have a cooling line going to them which the OEM does not have. I've removed them for inspection/replacement???and found that they are in nearly new condition.
I realize these are NOT the oem setup(which would be ideal), but, will these be safe to use? I ran the boat twice before I began restoration to shake down all that needed to be done, I had no cooling issues and ran at normal operating temp.
I want to be safe...but 600 for new mans/risers is a big chunk of change when these I have are nearly new.
Thanks guys!

PS. OEM would be the best option of course.

the Merc exhaust won't mate up to the Volvo y pipe on the inside of the transom plate. But, If your running thru hull exhaust they should work fine.

It actually has a 3"to4" adapter, then a length of the 4" hose connecting to the ypipe. I think its actually 3.75". It doesn't leak with this set up but definatly not ideal...to they make a longer 3to4" adapter so as to eliminate the extra joint? I've looked around but only find the short one like I have....Thanks for the quick reply.

total length would be approx. 12"........The angle of the riser matches up pretty good to Ypipe...I'm wondering if it hasnt been cut. I'll try to get pics of the setup. Waiting for new man/riser gaskets to arrive so i can reinstall.

anybody have an issue with this set up? It works, but, i'm restoring many other things on her... new mans/risers are not out of the question if the current set up is unsafe or could damage the motor in someway... I would like at the VERY LEAST try to find an exhaust hose that will eliminate the extra joint...thanks guys

I don't see why it would damage anything. Water has to flow freely. You found the reason why to buy matching parts.

I realize you didn't buy them. It's your call. Since you're doing a large rebuild, maybe you could use it the way it is and swap them out once you've got all the other bugs your going to run into worked out.

Post some pics of the engine, manifold, reducer, and y pipe.

You mentioned the manifolds are near new so,
i would put the merc parts in craigslist for 60% of new or more + a good photo and see if anyone needs them. Then put that towards nice new manifolds

coastalcruiser: I nearly pushed the "purchase" button on a set of mans/risers a couple times... I still may and just as you suggest, sell the old ones. You wanna buy em? lol

Did the duoprop provide a significant gain?

I noticed better fuel economy and you can feel the props grab when you hit the gas.
the boat steers perfectly straight when reversing and at cruising speed you can let go of the wheel.

Re: mercruiser mans/risers on VP225d?

that sounds interesting!!! I have very little control in reverse(when the drive stays down) and if I let go at cruise speed we'd spin a circle!....the admiral would likely kick my butt if I added duoprops to the list of repairs...
I'll have some pics up tomorrow of my exhaust set up...riser gaskets should arrive tomorrow..
