Is that 50 psi at idle with motor at operating temp? You could pick up a cheap mechanical gauge and hook it up and confirm readings..I would of thought high oil pressure would blow the bypass valve open located were you spin your filter on??

Alldodge, thank you for taking the time to look that up....I did find on Mercruiser's site their parts list. You have to look under intake manifold and front cover for the filter if not using the remote filter. I have the right one. The one you have listed is for the remote filter....but once I get all this straightened out...I may have to get the remote filter!!!!!! Hopefully, cleaning up that rust will do the trick. If you all are ever in the Chesapeake bay near northern Calvert County Md. Beers are on me!!

Woops my bad, glad you caught my error. Sure hope it's not the in the oil pump but think BT might have the answer

That was 50 psi cold. But seems like the oil pressure was always a little high on this engine/boat.

Yeah, as soon as it stops raining...ill run out and try and clean up the mating surface and reinstall. Will know soon enough...i guess. If the oil pressure relief is stuck closed....what kind of oil pressure readings would I see? Im assuming based on Bt DR..comment about blowing out a hose...I should see very high pressure if I put on a mech gauge. Although, it would seem as if my dash gauge is working since i watched it drop to below 20 when alarm went off. Well working..but maybe not accurate lol.

50 psi cold is normal.I doubt your gauge is off by much. That valve is there so if your filter plugs it opens and bypasses the filter so your engine gets oil.Thats why you don't run High pressure pumps. Bt doc would be referrin to the valve in the oil pump that regulates pressure. But at 50psi cold I couldn't see it..

No Title

Ok sun came out. I drained the oil once again...nothing like wasting 4.5 qts of oil for the 2nd time. Took the filter back off...checked it out...looked good and wasnt deformed. I took a picture of the filter mount(picture is below), and cleaned off that orange stuff and some of the rust. I dont know what the orange stuff was...looks like high temp rtv sealant. But I didnt use it and all the filters ive used are mercruiser or quicksilver with a black gasket. Anyway cleaned well, wiped it clean, cleaned up filter and gasket put a little oil on the gasket and reinstalled.

Turned her on and no oil leaks....let it run on muffs for about 15 mins or so...engine was up to temp at 150. Oil pressure at idle is still 50psi at 150deg. I did bump the throttle a tad to just over 1800 rpms for a split sec and pressure went to just under 60 and then back to 50 at idle. I am idling a little high around 900 rpms....I seem to remember she idled high last year until I got a chance to run her on the water a little bit....and then she settles down to 500 to 600.

At the moment, all seems well. Not sure about the psi, I think its where its been the 3 years ive owned the boat. Grady white seafarer. The boat did sit for 12 years or so with a new engine and outdrive that only had a 50 hours on them. Could be there is some rust in the oil passages.

I did check the ohms on the oil sender and at idle was 81.2 ohms. Seems about right for 50psi. Im hesitant to put on a mech. gauge...its tough to get in there and my luck Ill break the sender trying to get it out. :)

Run it? any more thoughts on the PSI? Again you all have been extremely helpful and truely appreciate all the help and advice.

Dave

I think your fine, and the silicone on the face would be my guess of what gave you the problem. Getting a mechanical gauge may give a more accurate reading, but if the relief valve is stuck, it's going to leak later.

The old filter had no damage, so it was just a gasket leak IMO

50 psi at 900 rpm at 150F on muffs is normal for a healthy engine. Your oil wouldn't really be to warm just idling on muffs. Next time out warm her up then go for a wot run oil pressure should be around 50 60 psi then slow down to an idle 650 700 rpm and your oil pressure will likely be around 25 30 psi. This is because now your oil is up to opperating temp.. As soon as you bump you throttle it should jump back up. A sbc needs only 10 psi for every 1000 rpm.

Good luck.
And, unless you were worried about contaminated oil, you should be able to change the filter without draining the oil.

Marc c, thanks for the tip, I never realized that. Makes sense now that I think about it. geesh.

I did go ahead and check pressure with a mech gauge and had the same readings. So, she is buttoned back up and Im going to go clean up my mess now. Huge thanks to all of you!!!!

My offer still stands on the beer. lol. Ill post up after I put her in the water. Maybe tomorrow if not then the weekend.

You may still want to consider a remote kit. Even with my 2.5l that had lots of access it was a pain. I would not want to change it on the 5.7 without it.

There's a small bowrider with a 4.3 that I winterise. I have to remove a storage divider, remove the loom clips from the fuel fill and vent hoses that run along the top of the port side stringer and then hold them out of the way with a piece of 2X4 wile I attempt to get the filter out without making too much of a mess. Some times I think that it wold be worthwhile telling the owner that I'd install a remote kit for free. And to top it all off everything's carpeted so you can't find the original screw holes in the fiberglass.
