The only other place with oil pressure is the #1 main bearing cap, but you would have to crack the timing cover under the balancer seal for that to leak

Gentleman, and ladies if there are any here posting :). I have updates. One thanks to all for taking the time to help me out. Your advice has been very helpful in trouble shooting. Ok updates: 1 - I drained out the remaining oil and there is no water in the oil. I replaced the filter with a new one. 2- wiped the engine down and checked around the oil sender/pressure senders. Ran the engine, and it is not leaking from the pan or anything but it is leaking still around the filter. Nothing coming from the oil sender/pressure area.

No double gasket error...i checked ;-). But, i did notice a fair amount of rust on the gasket mating surface??? That seems odd to me. I didnt think much of it but since im leaking a fair amount of oil around the oil filter...im guessing that could be the problem. I tighten it just a tad more then hand tight. It is very hard to get a hand on it in the back...so I have to use a wrench cup to tight it a little.

So, I guess in the am, I will drain the oil and pull off the filter and sand the mating surface with some sand paper. Is there any thing else that Im not thinking of that would cause a leak around the filter? Unless im using the wrong filter?

Im using the same part number as the one that was on there when I bought it....I guess ill look it up to be sure. Any thoughts on why the mating surface would have rust on it? Ive had the boat for 3 years now....first time Ive had a oil leak issue.

May be time to check into a remote oil filter. Either way glad you found the issue

Glad you found it.
Be careful with sandpaper grit getting in the block.
Might try a scotchbrite pad or 3M makes some non gritty rust/paint pad/discs.

The oil filter should be tightened 3/4 turn after the gasket makes contact. Use some fine emery cloth to clean away the rust. make sure to clean away all the grit afterwards.

good ideas on the emery cloth. Thanks again. Ill be sure to post up my results tomorrow. Anything else I should look for when I take the filter back off again?

Make sure it's the proper filter. And be sure to put oil on the sealing ring of filter be4 you tighten. DO NOT use sandpaper in that area..

Ok, Emery colth ok though? Im using quicksilver 18-7879 filter. Seems to be the right one.

Alldodge, thank you for taking the time to look that up....I did find on Mercruiser's site their parts list. You have to look under intake manifold and front cover for the filter if not using the remote filter. I have the right one. The one you have listed is for the remote filter....but once I get all this straightened out...I may have to get the remote filter!!!!!! Hopefully, cleaning up that rust will do the trick. If you all are ever in the Chesapeake bay near northern Calvert County Md. Beers are on me!!

The # you gave is a Sierra #. It cross references to the oe # from Quicksilver (883702q) for Mercruiser V6 models with engine mounted filters. So it's correct. on edit: it matches the Wix 51040. I think AD had a little error. The filter he showed is for the 4 cylinder engine.
You have to watch out though because the remote mounts use the filter that goes on the V8's.

The V8's use a 13/16-16 thread. The V6 block mount uses a metric thread that's 18 mm 1.5.

You will not regret getting a remote filter kit.Get the one that has the filter bottom down.

I will hold off on my next answer untill we hear back from you. If I`m right the new filter will leak also.

Well, that isnt encouraging Doc. What are you thinking? If there is anything else I should be doing...let me know? Im game. Think something is up with the oil filter mount? or too much pressure for some reason? PSI at the dash gauge read 50 psi at idle but that is what I normally see...not that it is right...just what its been.

Did the old filter look strange? If its a over pressure condition and the new filter squirts from the gasket ,you really want me to finish?

Yeah, i might as well know the possibilities....old filter looked ok....just a little rust on it...but it didnt seem deformed. You thinking oil pump relief valve?

Ok then. Had a motor come in with the same issue ,a leak. Did the usuall stuff still leaked. removed the filter and installed a remote setup. Promptly blew a hose.
That seem`d strange but replace the hose and blew another one. Now I`m stumped. We had a beer session and the guys didnt believe a hose could just burst. So they installed another hose and promptly were covered in oil .. Turns out the oil pressure reliefe valve in the oil punp got jammed closed.
Replace the oil pump and everything was fine

Yeah..I'm worried about the oil pump..ThanKS for letting me know...would I'd be able to see high pressure on dash or mechanical gauge?
