Mercruiser Alignment

I installed a new engine and have spent half a day trying to align it. I also replaced the gimbal bearing, the drive is an Alpha. I used machinest die on the end of the alignment tool and while the alignment improved with adjustments, I consistently had strike marks on the port side of the tool. I tapped the tool to align the gimbal as prescribed in other posts, the result was the same. I finally noticed that the gimbal bearing slides around a bit and after getting it to slightly slide laterally , the alignment is close. Currently the tool slides in easily, however as it enters the coupler there is a slight bump and the tool pitches upward (very slight). I can hold it with 2 fingers and slide it in. But, I'm hoping someone can confirm whether moving the gimbal so it aligns with the coupler is the right or wrong approach.

What other work has been done on the boat. Transom or stringer work? Is the transom rotten? Rear motor mounts ok? what engine, what drive, what year ???????

Re: Mercruiser Alignment

The engine is a new 5.7l Vortec, the outdrive is an '92 Alpha 1. The engine required a new 12 3/4" flywheel and coupler (GLM). No other work has been done and the transom, etc is solid. I was just outside playing with it again and the tool slides in easily and very slightly bumps the top edge. If I lift up on the tool while inserting it through the bearing, the bump is almost imperceptible.

How the bar comes out of the coupler is more of an indication of the alignment than how it goes in. If it pulls easily out of the coupler with no resistance (or very, very little) then the alignment is fine.
Read this thread, and watch the video's http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=382029.

Re: Mercruiser Alignment

The bar does come out easily. I just test fitted the outdrive and it seems to go on with the usual finessing. I need to find a heating pad for my back now but thanks for the help.
