Curious if anyone has done it without the mercruiser tool.

Currently, our harmonic balancer/rotor is off the shaft, pending delivery of some replacement parts. The installation of the harmonic balancer/rotor is currently my concern.

For reference, here is a link to the procedure with the tool referenced.

Any suggestions for alternatives?

You can rent a harmonic balancer installer from several auto parts stores. Here is one from Auto Zone for free. There are different thread adaptors for the threads in the crankshaft
You pay for it when you go and can return it back when your finished.

and O'Reilly's here: https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/...rtough-harmonic-balancer-installer/ren1/67006

I wouldn't beat it on the crankshaft with a hammer.

Thanks I appreciate your response. I checked out local parts store and he didn’t even know what I was talking about LOL. I’m in Canada so auto zone is N/A. I’ll check out other places though. I am avoiding the use of hammer at all costs. I mean the kit is $50 to buy for one use, even that’s worth it. However repairing this engine has already blasted the budget so trying to save wherever we can…

Ebay has them even cheaper: https://www.ebay.com/itm/4029952142...CUGggJlijXoaQqfSiSYzrlsd5Q==|tkp:BFBMjsqNgotg. I just don't understand how an automotive parts store doesn't have a clue on a harmonic balancer installer. Do yourself a favor and get it online. for the 50 bucks it's worth it. Everything is expensive today, chock it up to saving money doing it yourself. Good luck

I own my MC470 1978 .. still own it .. I had to fix the internal water pump..
the cam shaft is corroded .. then I put a s/steel sleeve over the corroded cam shaft area ..I pulled out the wheel puller tool balancer ... on the crank shaft.

I used distilled water in the engine and 60% anti freeze 40% distilled water ..
no corrosion.......
