Hello I am looking for information on a replacement starter for a Mercruiser 470 3.7L with CCW rotation. It did not come with a starter is the one I need the one without the solenoid that is LH? Or can I get one with a solenoid attached? A part number or location I can get it would be helpful. Thank you.

Re: Mercruiser 470 3.7L starter question

More than likely the engine is standard rotation (CW) and oly the outdrive is counter-rotating.
The starter should fit all the 470's.

Re: Mercruiser 470 3.7L starter question

Thanks Eddie but the starter I needed would not fit all 470's its an early model prestolite starter.. so that leads me to my next question has anyone done an alternator conversion? Was it worth it, anything we need to know ahead of time, a recommended kit etc? From everything I read it sounds like this would be a better route then replacing the old early model starter. Thanks.

You can get a permanent magnet gear reduction starter for it that has a solenoid. The part number is 2-2591-DR-2 ($139 on ebay). You wire the slave solenoid into starter solenoid rather than the starter. This thread talks about it http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=450477&page=2 Read post #28 it will fit yours. Seems to work just fine for me, and is about 2/3 the size of the old one. Good luck.

I did, I used the kit from Breezeworks http://www.breezeworks.net/ works just fine. Kit is bout 1/2 the price of a new Mercruiser regulator LOL.
