I got the impeller rebuilt, reinstalled everything and the boat ran great this weekend. Zero issues! On the last day at the ramp just as we were getting ready to trailer the boat (what a coincidence), turning the key resulted in nothing.

I’m not even hearing a click from the solenoid. Bypassed neutral switch and still no start.

I can jump the two large posts on the solenoid and boat cranks strong, so I know starter and battery are good.

Does anyone have a diagram for the starter solenoid on a ‘89 3.0 merc? I can’t find one, and it’d be very helpful for my diagnosis

Dont have a diagram for your boat you want to look and see if the yellow red wire on solenoid is getting 12 when key is in start. If it is not getting 12 v power to or from the key through the neutral safety switch in shifter is being interrupted . If you do get 12 v on it then slave solenoid is bad as you have jumpered around it and it starts

attched is merc wire color list for your use . You should be able to find a wiring digram on line that is close enough to help

I try to do a good job of updating my threads (and appreciate all of the support you guys gave me my first year trying to get this thing sorted). I'm glad to say it's been cherry the past couple years and has needed nothing than routine maintenance. I did opt to install a Quicksilver fuel water separator kit for peace of mind.

PS- since I never replied to my issue above with the resolution, it just turned out to be the cheap a$$ starter solenoid going out in less than a week. Tough lesson for me to always stick to OEM quality components!

cheap parts will bite you.... I just replaced a less than three year old set of bellows because I went "cheap" chinesium parts..... I replaced with Sierra this time..... much thicker rubber, so hopefully will last better.... and were really no more expensive than the Chinesium crap from the Bezos Barn......

Better yet use the OEM bellows. I changed mine last year- 18 years old the drive shaft bellows was just starting to look chaffed on edges of ribs, exhaust had already given up the ghost.

I figure while they are pricey I will not own the boat next time they need done...
