try michiganmotorz for a distribution they had a new one for my gm inline 4 for $200 maybe they sell one for the 6.
Also the fiber gears do fail. I broke mine 2 years ago. 1971 140hp had been rebuilt prior to my ownership but I suspect the gears where not changed.

Yeah no kidding on that storm. That was awful. Joplin is southwest, Missouri. I'm about 40 miles west of St. Louis. Anyways the springs being NLA is exactly right. I called all the local shops and one of them hooked me up with this place up in Maryland that had 2 springs in stock. I seriously looked everywhere on the Internet and couldnt find anyone that had a set left over through the years except for this place. I think the shop was called tri state marine. I'm pretty sure it's part number 52880, but that's off the top of my head. I picked them up for .60 cents a piece. Pretty lucky find these days.
