An apples to oranges comparison, the 78 merc is crank rated, the 110 evinrude is prop rated.
I had a 115 prop rated merc, and it had better holeshot and higher top speed than my crank rated evinrude 140, on the same hull

I would use the 110 Evinrude for that project. Couple of reasons,
#1 the Evinrude is newer
#2 Omc motors tend to be cheaper to rebuild than TOP motors.
#3 parts are easier to get as there is still some factory support for the V4 engines.
Nothing against the TOP Merc they just.tend to have more.expensive parts on them.

The evinrude is an 84 the merc. Is a 78 but I'm wanting to be able to use the pontoon for multi purpose . Fish from camp from and pull a tube . That being said is the evinrude still my best bet

Yes. The Evinrude will be happier lugging a big 'toon. Make sure you prop it to peak around 5500 RPM, though.

Are you sure the Evinrude is an 84 model. The 110 evinrude did not come out until 1986.

I like the mercury inline engines but I would agree as well in that in your application the evinrude is the better choice.

No OMC guys around right? That Merc is a thoroughbred and the Evinrude is a plow horse. For a 'toon you want the latter....

The Merc i6 90 is a Plowhorse of an engine, extremely strong bottom end, but it really gets asthmatic above 5000 rpm(small intake and exhaust ports and fewer reed valves. The 110 Evinrude, if it has the bubble/turtle back exhaust cover is very similar to the crank rated 140, and that engine is ported and exhaust tuned to breath better above 5000 rpm, with a reduction of torque at low speeds. The crank rated evinrude 140 was best suited for light fast hulls, on big heavy hulls, it really didn't do much better than the crank rated 115

A tach for either engine would draw it signal from the Alt.

Alternator?

Yes, alternator. That is what they call the stator windings that produce the charging voltage. The stator produces an AC voltage, which is supplied to the tachometer. The tach counts the pulses and divides by the number of coils, giving RPM.

That way different motors with the same charging coils (2 or 4 or 6 cylinder motors) can share a tachometer
