Posting this for a co-worker.
Yesterday, after letting it sit for almost 3 months in cold weather (lower unit not winterized), he took the boat out. The first few minutes were fine, then when the motor was put in gear, it made a lout rattling/grinding sound. (Only forward) Reverse did not make this sound, only forward. While in neutral, it didn't make the noise. Any ideas on what it could be and how much to fix? We drained the lower unit oil and it was still full, coming out of the vent plug. It did look a little milky but not too bad.
*edit* Forgot to add...its a 99 200hp EFI.
