I just bought an 17 foot, 85' Conroy by glastron. Has 140 merc cruiser w/ merc cruiser outdrive. ( not sure which model outdrive) tried to fill outdrive last night from bottom w/ vent screw out, got 1 quart in it and now it will not take any more, but is not coming out vent. It has back pressure. Any ideas? First boat. I'm an automotive mechanic.

May have to split the unit. Your filling from the bottom with the vent screw in the upper unit removed? Should not be any pressure build up unless the oil tranfer hole is plugged.Go to Adults Only section and get manual #6

Re: merc cruiser outdrive- trouble filling

Thank you for the reply. Yes, I had the vent screw in the top case removed. I talked to a boat guy today, he said something about maybe I have one that u fill each case separately.....never herd of that from all the reading I've been doing. So, I think I will separate the cases and see what I got. Is there a re-usable gasket, or will I have to find one? Thanks again for the help

a 85 model year should not have 2 seperate oil fills.

If you are talking about an Alpha drive, then there isn't any gasket between the lower and upper sections. There is a small rubber seal that you have to keep track of, that seals the lube path between the sections.

But...if you are doing this, it would be the logical time to service the impeller. A new water pump kit will include this seal.

Happy boating!

Thanks again for the help. Dropped lower unit to inspect oil tube, was definitely plugged. Removed top cap of upper unit to find she had been ran dry. :( rebuilt upper unit. Gears were good, just bearings and races ruined. Got bearings and races from local parts store and ordered seal kit, total of $140 in parts. :) runs great!

May not have been run dry, may have been water that ate the bearings.
