I have what might be a dumb question to all of you expirenced boaters. I have a merc 200 20 hp that I have been getting ready for the water after sitting for about 15 years. I have it running really well and am down to the last item. I have replaced all the old wiring, rebuilt the carb, rebuilt the fuel pump, replaced the impeller in the lower unit and changed the fluid. I have been running it in a trash can mostly but decided to run it on the muffs today. My dumb question is while it was running there was water coming out thru and around the prop. Also exhaust was coming out thru there. Is this normal operation? I have to fix a leak at the prop seal this weekend. After I shut it down I noticed a puddle of oil under the prop. I pulled the prop off and there was about 10 feet of fishing line rapped around the shaft. It looked like some of the seal melted from the friction as the fishing line had what looked like black rubber melted on it. I quess I need to know if I need to do anything else other than the seals in the lower unit. I have spent 20 plus years as an Ford auto tech but have never messed with many outboards before. Another question, is this to much motor for a 14 foot john boat. It was on the boat when I got it 15 years ago but I have no info of how it did on the boat.I have learned so much from this site and it has made bringing back to life this 41 year old outboard alot eaiser. I have even helped a few other people on this site with the same motor with the info I have learned from here. Pic of motor below.
Thanks to everyone for all there help.
