A pussycat was looking for a warm place to hunker down this weekend and decided to take refuge in my school's main electrical vault. All nine lives and then some were literally evaporated when kitty walked across phases of the transformer that supplies my spaces. Only one leg was still hot after kitty sizzled and soon the load took care of that leg. Now add zero degree temps and the heating system coils in the external wall units in the classrooms, labs, offices, etc.. all begin to grow beyond their elastic limit. Since the water is municipal service the pressure in the system was maintained and then the party started. In the two engineering halls I oversee the damage is extensive. Water was cascading down every stairwell when the first person arrived this morning. Not sure where to begin, but I will be busy for a while. Tomorrow I am bringing waders and ice skates.

We had the main line to the fire suppression system in my building blow out due to freezing temps last weekend. Flooded the first floor and made a mess before we could get the main shutoff closed. It actually blew the coupler at the aux shutoff that goes to the sprinklers.. It happened a few years ago also, just not as bad

WOW, i heard cats can cause damage, but that's ridiculous!

On a smaller scale, much much smaller scale. We has a mouse crawl up into the 220V wiring in our clothes dryer. (He was sentenced to death by electrocution for trespassing.) My son and I discovered this grizzly scene while servicing the dryer, and I swore him to secrecy as I know my wife would never use the dryer again if she knew a dead mouse had been in it.

The mouse looked like it had been there for 10 years, and I could have explained to my wife she had been drying clothes via a dead mouse for 10 years, and it wouldn't hurt anything to use the dryer since the little guy was now extricated. But I wasn't going there.... (Shhh, mum's the word.)
