So I received my water pocket cover kit yesterday and cracked open the stern drive, removed the old one and it really didn't look too bad. Of course, I would gladly defer to you folks for your thoughts on it. Pics below. I pulled the impeller as well even though I just replaced it. The question was asked if I had installed the key...i had. I followed Chris' video to the "T". Anyway, here's the pics. Any thoughts/opinions/direction is of course appreciated. TIA...

Dave, did you buy a pair of the Quicksilver muffs yet? if not, it is a relatively cheap way to rule out the muffs as the reason you are overheating.

My boat with the MC-1 drive had overheated. Some of the plastics were visibly melted like candle wax and others distorted yet the water pocket looked pretty good. I replaced anything that was rubber or plastic.

I was in your shoes 2 seasons ago. I had never worked on a boat before. These guys steered me right. Almost 2 seasons of trouble free boating now with a ā€œfreeā€ boat.

That impeller looks like junk, not sure what you did to it after you replaced it, but looks fried

Put a straight edge on the gasket face of the water pocket cover. ANY distortion, toss it. New gasket though. Actually, you have a new one, toss the old one regardless.

May sure the surface in the drive shaft housing is super clean, and chase those screw holes!

Hey Camp...I did in fact buy some quicksilver muffs. Wish I could say that was the problem, but i believe its a bit more involved. Thanks again my friend.

What brand of impeller are you buying?

Dave, that impeller looks like it was run dry. Did you apply liberal amounts of marine grease inside the housing before installing the impeller?

Hey Camp...Well I put a thin "smear" in the cup per Chris' video. Maybe I need to add more.

So this time I'm not leaving anything to chance. Before I install the new impeller, I figured I would do a flow test on the lower housing BEFORE it's installed along with the water pocket cover and close it up. Looks like I have good flow...
