mariner spark problems

I have a 1986 90hp mariner I bought this fall,it was hard to start but comp.checked out good I could not get started last week end so checked spark 1 cyl. at a time with plugs out. had weak spark #1cyl. for a few seconds then nothing,figured starter was dragging so i replaced it today,strong spark for about 3 seconds then nothing.I was thinking stator might be bad so was going to buy dva meter and check but have been told stators dont work part time either they work or dont,is this true and if so any ideas what could be checked next.thank you for any ideas.

Are you using correct starting procedure?Choke or Enrichener system?I was told the wrong way and always had trouble at the boat ramp,sometimes 20 minutes to get started.Now she starts first go.For key choke(enrichener system) 1- pump ball firm 2-open tank vent
3-open throttle (in neutral) 4-turn key to on and push in for 5 seconds,then turn key to start.Works for me,and dont forget to back off revs as soon as she is running.
Set of new plugs wont hurt either.
If your going to start buying expensive parts for it,your first buy should be a merc manual....priceless!

I appreciate your answer but but I am actually losing all spark and am using a tester. so I know its not the starting procedure.

try swapping the #1 wire with another, then the coil, if nothing changes might be the switchbox or the trigger there are a few CDI diagnostic PDF's on the net with testing procedures for the box/trigger

Get the DVA meter or build a DVA adaptor for any volt/ohm meter, directions are posted here
